The San Dimas Planning Department is responsible
for administering the City’s development process and developing planning
strategies for the future of San Dimas. Planners prepare and monitor the
City’s General Plan and process applications for development projects.
The department performs current planning, advance
planning and code enforcement services. The Planning Department acts as Staff to
the Planning Commission and the Development Plan Review Board (DPRB). The
City
Council also utilizes the Planning Department to provide zoning, land use
and urban design analysis.
Planners provide information and assistance to
the public regarding the zoning code
and the San Dimas General Plan. To help citizens to better
understand the City’s planning process, the Department has published a series
of informational brochures that generally address City processes.
The San Dimas Architectural Theme
In the early 1970’s, the City Council adopted an
"Early California Village" architectural theme for the downtown area.
Over the years that "Early California Village" theme, also referred to
as the "Frontier" theme, has helped to create one of the most unique
downtowns in Southern California.
Frontier Village with its wood sidewalks, lush
landscape and interesting sites is a wonderful place to shop because of the
comfortable ambiance. Several historic
homes are located within just a few blocks, the most prominent being
the Historic Walker House.
Frontier Village boasts one of the best hardware
stores that you can find anywhere, many antique stores, a wonderful model train
shop, restaurants, and much more. Every Wednesday night the San Dimas
Marketplace, a very successful farmer’s market, takes over Bonita Avenue. It
is a fun place to be.
Frontier Village is not the only portion of the
city with well developed architectural guidelines.
The San Dimas General Plan sets forth a policy that development
within the city be designed with an "Early California" architectural theme. Some projects
have been developed that exhibit a "Craftsman Bungalow" look while
other projects are good examples of "Mission" and "Spanish
Colonial" styles of architecture.
Code Enforcement
The goal of the City’s Code Enforcement program is to
promote and maintain a quality living environment for residents. City Codes are
developed to promote the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Compliance
with City Codes helps to maintain healthy neighborhoods and creates an improved
quality of life in our city.
The City of San Dimas provides unbiased
enforcement of the City’s Municipal Code and other City regulations to ensure
property maintenance and to promote a quality aesthetic appearance throughout
the city.
Most Code Enforcement cases fall into the
following categories:
General property maintenance
Zoning Code violations
Building Code violations
Construction without permits
Illegal signs and signs constructed without permits
Removal or severe trimming of trees without permits
In every case, the City’s goal is voluntary
compliance. In some cases, this does not occur, so the City contracts with an area
legal firm to provide prosecution services.

City’s Code Enforcement program, please contact the Department at
